![]() ![]() I usually gun hunt on my private land, but since I was in the area for work (despite what the other poster said) and didn't have an opportunity to hunt where I normally do I accepted the invitation to hunt with my friends. I am not saying that all drives are bad, just that I had a poor experience this weekend and I don't ever want to experience that again. However, I got caught in a wave of the "partiers". I am just illustrating the negative experience I had from those hunters that have no respect for other hunters or their quarry." I want to re-iterate "I am not bashing southern ohio hunters/methods. He also complained about the trash and theft that takes place on his property during gun week. He has to move his horses from that barn to another barn because they have been shot by hunters during gun week. ![]() One of my friends owns property surrounded on 3 sides by the public land. However, the other hunters were driving and therefore limited our hunting. Not sure where you see all these deer drives on public but i've seen very lil of it in the last several years where i hunt and more people stand hunting or from the ground.i prefer to hunt from the ground myself now just taking the seat part from my hand climber.i think deer pick you out easier in a tree when youre wearing orange.anyway as long as i know monday and tuesday have always been sitting days on the public land i hunt.and you could prolly throw in wed.this year i hunted til thursday.no drives anywhere.the only change was less people as the week went on.and less people meant seeing less deer.you need people to move deer once the shooting begins.not as much on monday but its needed more as the days go on and the deer get a feel for the danger theyre in.if nobuddy is there to move them.they just hunker down and dont move until its all over or at dark.thats why people drive.and usually drives start later in the week because some hunters that sat earlier are panicing and do drives as a last resort.but if you are seeing drives imo its prolly your own fault.drives usually are done on the easier sections of the forest and along the hillside facing the road.so you need to be at least completely over that 1st hill from the road and in the wides area between roads and in the middle of that area.and the rougher the terraine the better.lots of strip pits with high walls will completely halt any driving just can not happen there.find those areas on a good topo map from the wnf headquarters.but personally i'd can at least part of your stand and hunt from the ground.and if you really wanna not see other hunters.get away from the forest trail or road you walked in on.according to how rought the terraine is this could be from 100yds.to 300 yds.if you stand on these hunter travel routes and watch valleys or benches you will be having solo hunters walking by you.hunters will still be moving deer too because when they take shots at deer and start tracking they will be jumping out deer thats hunkered down so be extra alert when you hear shots not too far from you.in most cases you will be seeing deer immediately.best time to stand hunt is when the most hunters are in the woods.monday-tuesday and saturday.good luck and welcome to ohio.:biggrin:Ĭlick to expand.I agree. I am just illustrating the negative experience I had from those hunters that have no respect for other hunters or their quarry. I am not bashing southern ohio hunters/methods. I will never take my kids there I don't want them to see that ugly side of hunting. I witnessed them shooting fawns, small does, and small bucks, and they joked "if it is brown it is down". I heard and saw people shooting 5+ times. I saw deer beheaded and left on the road. From what I saw most were hungover and would drop their trash in the woods. I have tremendous respect for the hunters that hunt public and don't lose their patience with other hunters. I will never do it again, and I will never hunt public gun again. Unfortunately, I spent the rest of friday and Saturday taking part of the drives, out of courtesy to my friends who invited me down to hunt. I found myself in the middle/crossfire from the drive. They setup a drive with 27 people and ran everything out of the mines. First time i hunted friday morning, I was sitting in a great hollow in southern ohio when 11 pickups came in at 830am at mach 5. I had the same experience friday and sarturday. ![]()
